About us

Pilarmonics are a ladies 4 part harmony chorus singing unaccompanied in the Barbershop style. We are proud members of SABS (Spanish Association of Barbershop singers [www.sabs.es]) and are current National Chorus Champions. We also won the SABS National Chorus competition in 2017, at our first convention.

The chorus was started in October 2015 in Pilar de la Horadada as En
Armonia-Pilar by Phil Molloy to try and encourage young people into singing, specifically in the acapella Barbershop style.

On 26th October 2015 we held our first SHIAD (Sing Harmony In A Day) in
Pilar Christian Community Church . The original idea was for the chorus to be in the main, a youth chorus with adults also included.  Unfortunately none committed to an outside chorus, they loved it…but didn´t come. Phil had to work hard to get more recruits in over the following months: Over the Christmas holidays, Phil invited Dawn Ritch to come and direct the new chorus with her, she was delighted. Together they both pounded the streets of Pilar and talked to everyone they could.

On 11th January 2016, Phil and Dawn welcomed Jo, Averil, Sandy, Lorraine,
Donna, Iris, Sue, Caz, Mo, Liz & Begoña to join them, along with Julie and
Andrew.  All but Liz & Lorraine officially joined what was then known
as En Armonia – a name chosen in 2015 until the new chorus together would vote for an official name.

After that first night Andrew sent an email saying he could not cope with
all the women and wished us the very best of luck! And so we became a ladies chorus and voted on the name Pilarmonics. This reflects the place where it all started and our love of harmony and friendship.

In April 2017 in our first Barbershop competition, we won the gold medal in
the SABS National Chorus Competition in Benalmádena, Costa del Sol. This was totally unexpected and a great reward for all the hard work we put into our competition songs.

Sadly, later that year, in August, Phil decided that she could not continue
with the chorus and stepped down from the President´s role and left us. We
wished her all the best, but we were suddenly without a President and without a rehearsal room, as we were no longer allowed to use the Pilar Christian Community Church.

Luckily one of Jo´s customers at La Zona bar had a large garage we could use util we found a permanent venue. This saw us through the summer until we were taken under the wing of Paqui, the mayor of San Cayetano. Here we have found our permanent home: in the Centro Civico to start with and now at the theatre in the Centro Civico in Dolores de Pacheco. Here we continue to go from strength to strength, winning the SAB National Chorus Competition for a second time in 2019.

If you want to join us on our journey, please come down to rehearsals in
Dolores de Pacheco every Wednesday at 18:45 to 21:15. You will be very welcome!
